DETROIT BBQ
PLATINUM PIED PIPERS-
Platinum Pied Pipers is a Detroit-based hip hop and R&B group comprised of producer Waajeed (Robert O'Bryant), and multi-instrumentalist Saadiq (Darnell Bolden, not to be confused with Raphael Saadiq). Their music usually features a rotating and varied array of artists.

The two met through rapper Baatin in 1992. Sometime in 2000, they decided to form a duo and began releasing 12"s and mixtapes. It was their collaboration with Dwele in 2003, however, called "Ridin' High" which caught the ears of music listeners, and set the stage for a full-length album. The pair have a rather distinctive mixture of sounds as, although Waajeed is primarily a hip hop producer, Saadiq is a protege of Motown producer Barrett Strong, making for a finely tuned middleground. As stated in interviews, the name "Platinum Pied Pipers" was chosen at random and has no connection to the Pied Piper folk tale.

w/ DJ HOUSE SHOES-
Hip-hop junkies and beat heads need to familiarize themselves with DJ House Shoes. He's one of the foremost experts on all things Dilla related, which is a technical way of saying the two came up together in the same gritty Detroit night clubs and vibed outside of the typical DJ/MC relationship. Shoes is out in L.A. now, carrying Dilla's legacy forward and bigging up Detroit artists like Guilty Simpson, Ta'Raach, Waajeed, Invincible, Marv Won, and Dilla baby's brother, Illa J who is just as ill as his big brother in his own right. Anyway, Shoes is the gateway to the whole Detroit sound right now.

5.24.SATURDAY
18+ EVENT :

THE PHANTODS

w/ PIRATE

w/ 333

18+ SHOW
THE PHANTODS-
Phantods was formed in 2005 by Gretchen King (vocals/keyboards), Nathan Jacobs (bass), Kenan Edler (drums), and Daniel Hagquist (guitar). Drawing from the breadth of the musical spectrum from pop to avante garde, Phantods puts together their own uniquely dark melange of post-modern 21st century rock. In Phantods music you will hear a hint of everything: rock, surf, metal, lounge, polka, reggae, and anything else that could be bent, broken, twisted, and wedged into the format of a modern day band. The sound fits well with the name, for to have the "Phantods" is to get the chills when frightened, that is, the creepy-crawlies, the heebie-jeebies. In 2007 Phantods continues to write, record, and build a fan base playing shows in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio, and around the midwest.

w/ PIRATE-
Pirate has flickered in and out of existence for three years, but in the past few months the atmospheric Columbus rock band has been moving full speed ahead. They reformed last fall — older, wiser and better than ever — after being thwarted several times by infighting since 2005. After playing together for a few months at a time, Daniel J. Francis, Nat Hagey and Michael Murtha went their separate ways in 2006. At that point they were in their early twenties — young, proud and unwilling to compromise.

Only now, with renewed focus, the proper lineup and the good sense to put the good of a song before anybody's ego, could they have pulled off music like this. Their obsession with working together has paid dividends within the band, and they hope to extend it into the local artistic community at large. Citing the Indie Art Capital movement and a number of their favorite bands in town, they called for a united effort to facilitate Columbus creativity in 2008.

w/ 333-
Have you ever wondered what it would sound like to fuck a stranger on the floor of a gas station bathroom? Perhaps you have wondered to yourself what that smell is that lingers wherever you go. The answers to these mysteries aren't beyond reach nor are they eternal questions that should plague humanity into war after war. Heres a hint. 333. No, not the trinity. Its a wang dang rock band. The once dumbly called Triple Three has come to pull down your shorts with a loving nightmare they call music. Offering up lullabies for a strong bellied, work-a-day community 333 prove that corporate slaves don't always need Viagra. This strangely erotic foursome will chick moan and man howl their way into your hearts and homes with little effort. This pop/rock-rooted onslaught dented with left over drugs like swill has accessibility that most odd rock groups tend to fall short. Without the normal curse of an over abundance of social awareness this 333 creature uses its tongue and cheek antics in a lead by example form. Yes, rock has been done before. Yes, guitars and chick singers are too normal to be cool. Isn't that the idea? Isn't that what we all do? Like the Japanese adding 'record' and 'fast forward' to our VCRs, 333 have carved out their own slot of improvements in the modern music gangbang. Putting the honesty and flow back where it belongs, in the music itself. No member stands above the other. Its the oddest thing. The chick is a member not a leader and for you rock freaks the men growl you into satisfaction. A true community of perverse distinction is the 333. I welcome you to this quadruple threat known as 333. Pull out your crotch and rock that stroke. This is rock, baby, like fingering yourself at a funeral.

SKULLYS IS THE HOME OF SUNDAY NIGHT REGGAE
w/ THE FLEX CREW-
Flex Crew's sound effects kill the pain of everyday angst like a morphine drip, with a consciousness-altering power. The sextet's power-packed reggae melds the tropical calypso roots of traditional reggae -- marked by that characteristic chord on the upbeat -- with the more militant brand, sometimes referred to as "rockers," that borrows from hip-hop, jazz, funk and rap. The result is a hard hittin' cosmopolitan strain of groove-dominated reggae. Flex Crew's mastermind, drummer/percussionist Troy "Daddy Troy" Jones, has performed with internationally known acts Identity, Steele Pulse, Michael Rose and Earl Zero. He was also the touring drummer Don Carlos of Black Uhuru fame.

SCION METRO LIVE TOUR Presents:
TOO-SHORT-
Todd Anthony Shaw (born April 28, 1966), better known by his stage name Too Short (seen on album covers as Too $hort), is an American rapper who started his career at the age of fourteen in Oakland, California.

Shaw was born in South Los Angeles, California, and raised in East Oakland, California during his teenage years. In the early 1980s, Short produced custom raps (called "special requests") for people with his high school friend, Freddy B. In 1983, Too Short released his first album, Don't Stop Rappin', on the local label 75 Girls.[1] This and his next three releases featured raw, simple drum beats using a LinnDrum drum machine in the early 1980s, switching to mostly the TR-808 and TR-909 by the mid-to-late 1980s. In 1986, Too Short and Freddie B. founded the Dangerous Music record label to distribute his music regionally.[1] Dangerous Music later changed names to Short Records, and then Up All Nite Records. With his 1988 release, Life Is...Too Short, he began infusing replayed established funk riffs (rather than samples) with his beats. It was then that he began to develop a noticeable fan base and a string of platinum albums.

Too Short's songs are principally recognizable for their emphasis on Pimpin' and related sexually charged topics. With the rise of gangsta rap in the late 1980s/early 1990s, his style found a natural place in mainstream rap. Too Short's popularity peaked in the 1990s with Short Dog's in the House in 1990 and Shorty the Pimp in 1992. The latter included songs such as "No Love from Oakland", "Hoes," and "Step Daddy," all of which deal with his exploits as a pimp. While "macking hoes" was a common topic in other gangsta rap of the time, particularly the popular rap put out by Death Row Records, it should be noted that Too Short lacked certain thematic elements associated with the genre. His work chronologically straddled the rise and decline of gangsta rap, and never really dealt with guns, killing, drugs, or gangs, but rather focused on the lifestyle of a pimp, the music industry, and sex. Indeed, his lyrics often criticize crack cocaine users, and Too Short only rarely uses the word "Nigga."

Performing with a 13 piece band
w/ CONNIE PRICE AND THE KEYSTONES-
"West Coast hip-hop has ventured into the urban and the suburban communities, taking with it a flavor that is undeniably its own. Connie Price & The Keystones have reached this level of authenticity...offering a unique mixture of live instrumentation, hip-hop heads can appreciate the relationship between MCs and the beats that inspire them..."
- Vapors

w/ DJ ELEVEN (The Rub. NYC)-
DJ Eleven began his career in Oakland, CA as a founder of Local 1200, a crew that includes the most sought-after club DJs in the Bay Area. Working and living in New York City for 6 years, Eleven uses his large, diverse music collection and extensive experience to keep crowds moving in the hottest nightspots on both coasts.

Eleven has moved crowds at high-profile events such as Spitkicker’s monthly party in NYC (founded by esteemed hip-hop MC Talib Kweli and members of De La Soul) and the 5-year anniversary of Philadelphia’s longest-running hip-hop party, Remedy 215. During the summer of 2003, Eleven served as tour DJ for the Nike Battleground Tour street ball tournament. He’s also spun at issue release parties for Mugshot Magazine and Wax Poetics and private parties for And1, Universal Music Group, Motown Records, and Complex Magazine

This DJ’s greatest strength is his uncanny ability to get any crowd out of their seats and keep them dancing all night long. His wide musical range allows him to spin sets including Hip-Hop/ contemporary R&B, Breaks and Rare Grooves, Disco/Funk/Soul, Reggae, and ‘80’s, with the skill that brings party people back for more.
